For many hundreds of years, oil paint, and the paintings produced within this medium, have stood the test of time as the principle medium for artistic creations, with some of the world’s most recognisable works, such as the Mona Lisa, being produced with it.

While not bound to any particular technique and style, there are several techniques commonly utilised in developing oil based features, with particular attention being paid the orientation of the brush and strokes, and the pressure applied to the piece, to create a litany of affectations, in part also thanks to the various properties of oil paint.

Various oils are employed in the production of oil paint and each different oil carries with it its own set of strengths that can affect the piece, such as drying times, and how the pigments use age and yellow over time.
